Most pricing goes forwards: take the cost, add a margin, publish the price, discover the fee ate it. Working backwards is both more reliable and barely harder, because the algebra closes in one step. Give this calculator your costs and the margin you want, and it returns the price that actually delivers it after the channel's fees.
The formula
Price = (fixed fees + total costs) ÷ (1 − percentage fee rate − target margin). When the denominator reaches zero the target is unreachable at any price, and the calculator says so rather than returning a number.
A worked example
A $29.99 product that lands at $8.00, sold on Amazon FBA in Home & Kitchen, 10×6×3 inches and 20 ounces packed:
| Revenue kept | $29.99 |
|---|---|
| Total fees | $10.35 |
| Total costs | $10.00 |
| Profit per unit | $9.64 |
| Margin | 32.14% |
| Markup | 96.4% |
| ROI | 96.4% |
What to watch
- Raising the price to cover a percentage fee raises the fee. The division settles the loop; adding the fee to the price does not.
- Targets become impossible well before 100%. On a 15% referral fee, no price reaches an 85% margin.
- The price you need differs by channel, which is a good reason to choose the channel before announcing the price.
- Check the result against what competitors charge. A correct price nobody will pay is still the wrong price.
The trap
Cost ÷ (1 − margin) with the fee left out. It gives a confident, specific and consistently low answer.
Questions
How do I price for a 30% margin on Amazon?
Add your fixed fees to your total costs and divide by (1 − referral rate − 0.30). With a 15% referral fee that is a division by 0.55, so the price is nearly twice your costs plus fees — considerably more than the cost ÷ 0.7 most people reach for.
Why is the answer higher than cost plus margin?
Because the referral fee is charged on the price you are solving for. Every dollar you add to cover the fee adds another fifteen cents of fee; the division resolves that in one step instead of iterating.
What if the target is impossible?
Then the fees plus your target add up to more than the whole sale, and no price works. The calculator tells you the highest margin the fee structure can ever leave, so you can pick a reachable target or a cheaper channel.
