Margin & Fee Calculator

E-commerce margin & marketplace fee calculator

Price a product once and see what every channel leaves you. Amazon referral and FBA fees, Shopify and card processing, eBay, Etsy, Walmart, TikTok Shop and WooCommerce — with the margin, markup, ROI and break-even behind each one. Nothing is uploaded; the maths runs in this tab.

Fee rates in this tool were published on …. Marketplaces reprice. Check your own seller dashboard before you commit to a price, and correct any rate that has moved under “Adjust fee rates” — your correction is saved on this device and used everywhere.

Your costs

Packaging, inserts, prep, returns allowance, advertising per unit — anything you pay per item that is not the product itself.

Volume & tax

Tick this where prices are advertised with VAT, as in the UK and EU. Tax is then divided out of the price rather than added to it — the difference on a 20% rate is about four percent of revenue.

The maximum discount is the deepest cut that still leaves you at zero. It is larger than the margin, because a percentage fee falls with the price.

Adjust fee rates

The published rates below are dated. If your account pays something different — a negotiated rate, a different country, or a schedule that changed after this build — type the real figure and every calculation on the site uses it. Leave a box empty to keep the published rate.

Margin, markup and ROI are three different numbers

Margin is profit over the selling price. Markup is profit over what the unit cost you. ROI is profit over the cash actually tied up in it. A product bought at $10 and sold at $20 has a 50% margin, a 100% markup and a 100% ROI — the same money, three answers. Quoting one and acting on another is the most expensive arithmetic mistake in retail, which is why this tool always shows all three together.

Why the fee is never one percentage

Amazon charges a referral fee that depends on the category and sometimes on the price, a fulfilment fee that depends on the size tier your box falls into, and monthly storage by cubic foot. Etsy charges a commission and a payment processor's cut separately. Shopify charges no commission at all but a subscription you pay whether you sell anything or not. Blending those into one number hides the thing that decides where you should list: fixed fees hurt cheap items and percentages hurt expensive ones.

Pricing backwards from a target

Most sellers price forwards — cost plus a margin — and then find the fee ate it. Pricing backwards is better and only needs one line of algebra: with fixed costs C, fixed fees F, a percentage fee rate f and a target margin m, the price is (F + C) ÷ (1 − f − m). The target-price tab solves that exactly, and tells you plainly when a target is impossible, which happens whenever the fees and your target together add up to more than the whole sale.

Why nothing is uploaded

Your landed costs and margins are the most commercially sensitive numbers you have. This page has no server to send them to: the calculations are JavaScript running in your tab, and what you type is saved only in this browser's local storage, which you can clear from the link in the footer. There is no account, no export to anyone, and nothing to leak.

Questions

Is this calculator free?

Yes, entirely, with no account and no limit on how many products you price. There is nothing to upgrade to.

Are the fee rates current?

They are the published schedules as of the date shown at the top of the page, and marketplaces change them. Treat the output as a close estimate and confirm against your own seller dashboard before you commit to a price. If a rate has moved, type the correct one under “Adjust fee rates” and every figure on the site updates to match.

Does it handle VAT and sales tax?

Yes, both ways round. Enter the rate and tick “the selling price already includes tax” if you advertise VAT-inclusive prices, as in the UK and EU. Tax is then divided out of the price instead of added to it, which on a 20% rate is a difference of about four percent of revenue — enough to turn a thin margin negative.

Why is the FBA fee different from the one Amazon quotes me?

Most often because of the size tier. Fulfilment is priced on the greater of actual and dimensional weight, so a light item in a large box is billed on the box. Check the dimensions you entered are the outer packaging rather than the product, and that the weight is the packed weight.

Can I compare Amazon against my own store?

That is what the compare tab is for. It prices the same product on every channel at once, including WooCommerce, where you pay only the card processor. Remember that a marketplace brings traffic your own store has to buy — add that advertising cost per unit under “other costs” to make the comparison honest.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. Every calculation happens in your browser, and what you type is kept in this browser's local storage so it is still there when you come back. Nothing is uploaded, and the “clear saved data” link in the footer removes it.
