Amazon charges the most complicated fee structure of any channel and the most predictable one: a referral percentage set by category, a fulfilment fee set by the size tier of your packed box, storage per cubic foot per month, and a flat Professional plan. Every one of those is published, so an Amazon price can be worked out to the cent before you list.

What {platform} charges

The same product at three prices

One product — $29.99 list, bought for $8.00, $1.50 inbound, $0.50 other costs — priced at three points, because the fee rate you actually pay depends on the price.

Price Fees Fee rate Profit Margin
$15.00$8.1054%-$3.10-20.7%
$29.99$10.3534.5%$9.6432.1%
$75.00$17.1022.8%$47.9063.9%

Notice the fee rate falls as the price rises. That is the fixed component — a per-order charge or an amortised subscription — spreading over a bigger sale. It is why a channel that looks expensive on a cheap item can be the cheapest on an expensive one.

How it compares

On this product at this price it places 9 of 9. WooCommerce (own store) leaves $9.18 more per unit. That gap is only part of the story: a marketplace brings traffic your own store has to pay for, so budget the advertising that replaces it before switching.

What to watch

The size tier does more damage than the referral rate. Fulfilment is billed on the greater of actual and dimensional weight, so an inch of unnecessary cardboard can cost more than a percentage point of commission. Measure the packed box, not the product.

Questions

How much does Amazon take per sale?

On our $29.99 example, $10.35 — about 34.5% of the sale once referral, fulfilment, storage and the amortised Professional plan are added together. The referral portion alone is 8% to 45% depending on category, with most at 15%.

Is FBA cheaper than shipping it myself?

Compare the fulfilment fee against your own pick, pack and postage, and include the storage you would pay either way. FBA usually wins on small, light, fast-moving items and loses on large or slow ones, where storage runs for months against a fee you also pay.

Do I pay the Professional plan if I sell nothing?

Yes — it is a subscription, not a commission, which is why it is shown here spread over your monthly volume. At low volume it is the largest fee you pay per unit.
