WooCommerce charges nothing. The software is free and the store is yours, so the only transaction cost is your payment processor — typically around 2.9% plus a fixed amount. That makes it the cheapest channel per transaction by a wide margin, and the most expensive in every other respect.

The same product at three prices

One product — $29.99 list, bought for $8.00, $1.50 inbound, $0.50 other costs — priced at three points, because the fee rate you actually pay depends on the price.

Price Fees Fee rate Profit Margin
$15.00$0.744.9%$4.2628.4%
$29.99$1.173.9%$18.8262.8%
$75.00$2.483.3%$62.5283.4%

Notice the fee rate falls as the price rises. That is the fixed component — a per-order charge or an amortised subscription — spreading over a bigger sale. It is why a channel that looks expensive on a cheap item can be the cheapest on an expensive one.

How it compares

On this product at this price, this channel leaves you more than any of the other 9 — though a marketplace brings traffic your own store has to buy, so add that advertising cost before treating the ranking as final.

What to watch

There is no commission because there is no traffic. Hosting, a theme, plugins and above all advertising are real costs that a marketplace bundles into its fee; budget them per unit or the comparison is not a comparison.

Questions

What does it cost to sell on WooCommerce?

Only payment processing — on our $29.99 example, $1.17, about 3.9%. Hosting and plugins are fixed costs that do not scale with the sale.

Is it really cheaper than a marketplace?

Per transaction, by a long way. Per customer, only if you can acquire them for less than the marketplace's commission, which is the actual question. Put your advertising cost per unit under “other costs” and compare again.

What costs does this calculator leave out?

Hosting, domain, paid plugins, and your time. They are fixed rather than per-sale, so divide your monthly total by monthly units and add it under “other costs” if you want the full picture.
